In Slovenia, the academic year starts in October and ends in September the following year. The university application period usually opens in February-March and closes in August-September.
However, not all study programmes follow this timeframe. Some have shorter or longer application windows, which is why you should check out the official deadlines early on.

APPLICATION PERIODS FOR BACHELOR’S AND SINGLE-CYCLE MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMMES 2023/2024.

CANDIDATES OF EU MEMBER STATES & SLOVENIANS WITHOUT SLOVENIAN CITIZENSHIP
The first application period: from 17 February 2023 to 20 March 2023
The second application period: from 21 August 2023 to 25 August 2023 – application possible for:
- Candidates who did not apply in the first-round application period.
- Candidates who have not been admitted into any of the degree programmes specified in the first-round application.
- Candidates who have not enrolled in the degree programme to which they have been admitted in the first-round application period.
- Candidates who have deregistred from a degree programme by 17 August 2023 inclusive.
The application period for still-available enrolment slots: from 22 to noon on 25 September 2023
Documents for admission procedure and recognition of foreign education:
Applicants must submit all supporting documents, listed in the university act. Applicants who will be completing their secondary education this year will have to submit all supporting documents by 1 August 2023, in accordance with the request for completion of the application.
Applicants who have already completed secondary education at the time of application and who already have the final certificate(s) must submit it by the end of the application period, by 20 March 2023. Other evidence of having fulfilled the entry requirements (e.g. a certificate of having passed the B2 level Slovenian language exam) must be submitted by 1 August 2023 at the latest.
Tests of ability, capacity, and skills
The tests will be held on 19 May and from 23 June to 7 July 2023 at academies and faculties, which will send to candidates a notice of the date and schedule of the tests at least five days before the test.
Enrolment limitation
On 5 April 2023, information about the enrolment limit will be published on the website of the University of Ljubljana. If a decision to limit enrolment is made, applicants shall be selected based on the selection criteria specified in the degree programme.
Selection procedure
The Higher Education Application and Information Service will carry out the selection procedure for enrolment between 10 and 20 July 2023 for all applicants with a completed recognition procedure. Applicants who will submit the required documents after the general selection procedure, will be selected subsequently after the conclusion of the recognition procedure.
CANDIDATES OF NON EU COUNTRIES
The first application period: from 17 February 2023 to 20 April 2023
The second application period: 4 and 5 September 2023 at the University of Ljubljana members which will announce available enrolment slots. In this period, the still-available enrolment slots are only available to the candidates who have:
- already applied in the first application period but was not accepted and for whom the decision on recognition of the educational qualification has been issued in the first application period,
- a decision on recognition of foreign educational qualification issued before 2005,
- finished secondary school in Slovenia (except the candidates who have finished international secondary school in Slovenia and for whom the recognition procedure is required),
- finished secondary school in SFRJ before 25. 6. 1991,
- the International Baccalaureate Diploma or The European Baccalaureate Certificate.

Results of the selection procedure
By 21 July 2023, all the applicants with a valid application will be notified of the results of the selection procedure. Applicants with the recognition procedure in progress by the time of selection will be selected subsequently and informed of the results of the selection by 20 September 2023 at the latest. Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship will be informed of the results of the selection by 4 August 2023.
Slovenian language as a requirement of the enrollment procedure.
Some faculties check knowledge of the Slovenian language. The candidates have to provide evidence of Slovenian language skills proficiency at level B2 of Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR) if they wish to enrol at the University of Ljubljana:
• Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television;
• Faculty of Arts – degree programme Psychology;
• Faculty of Health Sciences;
• Faculty of Pharmacy.
